Writing an interesting “About Me” blurb is quite challenging. In sum, I am a 29 year old, White, middle(ish) class female. My older brother and I were raised by two loving parents. Eventually they got divorced, but even that happens about 50% of the time these days. We moved from New Jersey to Colorado in 1998, where we grew up in a lovely 4 bedroom home. We did not have a white picket fence, but only because the fence was brown and 6ft tall, in accordance with the HOA regulations in our neighborhood. I graduated high school and college in 4 years (each, not total). Sound familiar? Incredibly. If you have a dating profile on Tinder or Hinge and live in the Denver metro area, you could set your radius to 15 miles and would likely find 400 girls like me. You’d scroll through her pictures and see her on a vacation holding a small, exotic creature. Or on the top of a mountain facing outwards, holding a peace sign to the camera. I’m not saying that I’m boring or have nothing to offer, but when I summarize my life, it doesn’t include an obvious “hook” that when you hear it, you think, “oh how interesting, tell me more”.
I can’t say something like, This all started when my family moved to its 6th house in 4 years, and I began coming to terms with the transience of life. This blog is a collection of poetry I wrote during that time, entitled “Don’t Go Changing: And Other Impossibilities”. There would be many flaws in that statement. Firstly, I moved once in 18 years. And I have never considered poetry a strength or even an interest of mine. And the idea of “transience” brings me quite a bit of anxiety.
I also couldn’t say something like, This all started after swimming the English Channel and becoming very passionate about swimmers’ ears and the art of decluttering your life, so I started this blog entitled “Unclog Your Life”. Although I am passionate about avoiding swimmers’ ears and having an organized T-Shirt Drawer, my journey getting there was much like anyone else’s. As a child, one too many beach days were ruined by clogged ears, and I watched one episode of “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” and having been folding my t-shirts differently ever since. All those life lessons without ever swimming the English Channel.
I also couldn’t say (this is my last one, I promise), This all started when I walked across the state of Tennessee, only coming in physical contact with people I met on Tinder. That’s where I came up with the idea for my blog, “Blisters and Misters”.
I could go on and on about what I, and this blog, are not. And I would like to, because doing so would allow me to avoid talking about myself and the blog. Here’s the truth about me: I’ve seen The Office at least 2 times through, every year, for the past 8 years. I’ve seen Parks and Recreation just about the same amount of times. I like running, biking, swimming, kayaking, hiking, and any other activity that allows me to wear athletic clothes instead of jeans. I also like reading and writing. Which brings me to this blog. I cannot give you any concrete information about what this blog will be, because I am still unsure. It is going to be part story-telling, part reflection, part aimless babbling, and part something-I-haven’t-discovered yet. I hope you’ll come along with me on this weird journey. It will not always be pretty, and, as much as I would like it to be, it won’t always be funny. But what I can promise is it will be honest.
So here you have it: This is Table for One.
